Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to 8th Grade English! It is my pleasure to announce that I will be your son/daughter’s 8th Grade English teacher during the 2016-2017 school year. I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you (both students and families), and I’m looking forward to a happy, productive, and successful school year.
During this course, students will learn, develop, and reinforce skills that will assist them in thinking critically, reading and interpreting a variety of texts, analyzing information, communicating effectively through writing and oral presentations, become better organized, and self-assess or reflect upon your own learning. This course will help you to develop an understanding of the ways in which language operates as a social process and how to use language in a variety of forms and situations. You will learn to speak, listen, view, read and write effectively.
For this 8th grade school year, your child will be preparing for becoming a 9th grade student. All of what we do in 8th grade English will help your child to be better prepared for the requirements of the 9th grade English classes for high school. As you may already know, in 9th grade the students must start to obtain credits towards graduation. Some students have already begun earning high school credit. Because of these more difficult high school curriculum requirements, the demands in 8th grade are higher than they were in 7th grade. Some of the students have problems with the more demanding curriculum and struggle with what is being asked of them to do. Others buckle down and raise their levels of expectation. Your child will need to do the best work possible to achieve the best possible education and achieve core curriculum assessment goals.
I believe it is important to keep the parents up to date with all that is happening in the classroom and school. Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement. I hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to visit the classroom, schedule a conference, or volunteer to help out, feel free and contact me at your leisure.
Once again, welcome to 8th Grade English. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Stout
